Real Madrid want Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann to succeed Cristiano Ronaldo as the star of the Bernabeu, according to journalist Eduardo Inda.
Griezmann has been repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United over the last couple of years but nothing has come from the reported interest.
And Real find themselves short of strikers having sold Alvaro Morata to Chelsea for £60million during the summer transfer window.
According to Inda, not only do Los Blancos want to replace Morata with Griezmann they also see him as the long-term successor to Ronaldo.
“Griezmann had a €100m clause, raised to €200m this summer and has now dropped back to €100m,” Inda told Spanish TV show El Chiringuito de Jugones.
“Madrid believes that he would be an excellent alternative to Cristiano Ronaldo, who is not eternal.
“Griezmann is 22, 23 years old [sic] and Cristiano is 32 and Benzema is going to turn 30 in December.”
Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, speaking last week, insisted that his side are lacking a No 9: “It’s true, when you look at the players we had like Morata…
“And when you see that now we only have [Borja] Mayoral that you might think we lack a No 9.
“I would have liked Morata to stay, but he wanted to play more and to leave.
“It wasn’t possible to sign another player.”
