Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard poured praise on Arsenal centre-half Laurent Koscielny, tipping him as “the best defender in the league”.
Koscielny helped Arsenal into the last 16 of the Champions League with a 3-0 win at Olympiakos on Wednesday night, with Ferdinand full of praise for the Frenchman after the game.
“Laurent Koscielny, when he’s on form, he’s the best defender in the league for me,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“He’s one of those you don’t want to play against – he’s quick, he’s aggressive.”
Gerrard was also full of praise for the defender, adding: “”Koscielny put in one of the best European defensive performances I’ve ever seen. It was up there with the Terrys and Carraghers.
“[Olivier] Giroud will get all the headlines but for me Koscielny was man of the match tonight; last-ditch tackles, big headers.”
Despite Ferdinand’s praise of Koscielny, he believes Arsenal should strengthen in both defence and midfield.
“I think they need some more cover in the central defensive area,” Ferdinand added.
“They need a dominant central midfielder. It’s not been the same since [Patrick] Vieira left.”
