Southampton have completed the signing of Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu for £5million on a three-year-deal.
The Spaniard joined Chelsea from Barcelona in 2011, but has featured just 34 times for the Blues and spent the last two seasons on loan at first Valencia and then Stuttgart.
Speaking to Southampton’s official YouTube channel, Romeu said that he felt he will fit in well with manager Ronald Koeman’s style of play, and that the time was right for him to leave Chelsea.
“I think it’s good to have a coach who wants to play football and do the right things,” he explained.
“When I spoke with him, he more or less told me exactly what I was looking for and the style of play I’ve been looking for.
“That’s what I was looking for when I came here – a coach like him who can teach me a lot. He knows life as a player, and it will be very good for me to work under Ronald Koeman.”
He added: “After spending two years on loan, I needed something permanent and a club with a future – and I think I chose the right one.”
Saints executive director of football Les Reed expressed his delight at securing the services of the 23-year-old.
“Like Ryan Bertrand, we believe we have recruited another Chelsea player with an excellent pedigree but also with lots of potential to develop,” said Reed.
