Rovers edge fiesty affair

Rovers had the best possible start when a mistake by Danny Woodards in the third minute let in Dale Jennings who netted past advancing goalkeeper David Martin.
The visitors levelled from the penalty spot after 14 minutes. Tim Cathalina handled a Peter Leven cross and Leven scored off the underside of the bar from the resulting spot-kick.
The Merseysiders regained the advantage after 22 minutes when Dietmar Hamann conceded a penalty for a trip on Jennings and Ian Thomas-Moore found the left corner. A fine shot by Jennings from an Enoch Showunmi pass after another Woodards error made it 3-1 after 25 minutes.
Sub Lewis Guy and Leven were denied by fine Peter Lucasci saves early in the second period and any chance of a comeback virtually disappeared with Gary MacKenzie’s red card for a challenge on Cathalina.
Tranmere’s Zoumana Bakyogo soon followed for a second yellow but Thomas-Moore made it 4-1 with a good finish when put away by the impressive Jennings in the 76th minute. Sam Baldock grabbed a second for the visitors with six minutes remaining with a close-range finish.
