Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have delayed signing new deals at Arsenal, according to reports.
The duo, who are key members of Arsene Wenger’s side that finished second in the Premier League last season, have yet to sign fresh terms ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The Times claim that no significant progress has been made in discussions with the star pair and that any deals are unlikely to have to wait until after the end of the transfer window.
‘Arsenal will start the Premier League season with doubts surrounding the long-term futures of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sánchez after failing to agree new contracts with their two biggest stars over the summer,’ The Times report.
‘The club first began contract negotiations with both players’ representatives last September in the hope of tying them down to long-term deals, but no real progress has been made and the talks will not resume until after the transfer window closes at the end of the month.’
The worrying news comes as the club continues to struggle to find a top quality striker, while also facing a defensive crisis with Gabriel and Per Mertesacker set to miss a significant part of the season through injury.
Back in April, Wenger tried to reassure fans that Sanchez and Ozil were “keen” to remain at the Emirates Stadium.
“These two players have two years to go on their contracts at the end of the season,” Wenger said.
“So that is why we are not in a hurry. The players are very keen to stay and we are talking.”
