Scholes: Replacing Carrick will be Jose’s biggest issue

Paul Scholes has praised Michael Carrick as a “big help” during his career at Manchester United and reckons Jose Mourinho have his work cut out trying to find a suitable replacement for the midfielder.

Carrick joined the Red Devils in 2006 from Tottenham and has since won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and a Champions League trophy.

And Scholes believes that the reliability and consistency of Carrick will be extremely hard to replace whenever he decides to leave Old Trafford.

“It was a big help for me when I was playing,” Scholes told Goal.

“I can only talk from experience from what you know and I knew playing with Michael that I had somebody next to me who was reliable. He was always in the right place.

“If you wandered off somewhere it didn’t matter because Michael would be there behind you backing you up.

“It was just about being really comfortable with who’s playing next to you and whenever I played with Michael I always felt comfortable.”

When asked if Mourinho’s biggest job will be replacing Carrick, the former England midfielder replied: “Yes. There are players out there capable of doing it but that’s up to him in who he sees in that role.”
