Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick will be unavailable for Manchester United against Liverpool on Sunday.
Schweinsteiger has sustained a knee injury, missing the 3-3 draw with Newcastle in midweek as a result, but was expected to return for the clash at Anfield. Carrick had similar hopes after picking up a knock.
But manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed United will be without both against the ninth-placed side at the weekend.
He told MUTV: “Schweinsteiger is coming back but he needs more time.
“Carrick is injured and cannot play.”
Such injuries will force Van Gaal into selecting either Marouane Fellaini or Ander Herrera alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in central midfield if, as expected, he keeps faith with his trusted 4-2-3-1 formation. There has only been one winner out of Fellaini v Herrera this season.
Phil Jones is not expected to feature but should be back soon, while Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo remain unavailable.
