Souness: Tippy tappy City are missing something

Graeme Souness has slammed Manchester City’s performance in their 4-0 loss to Everton and reckons they need more energy in their central midfield.

Goals from Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas, Tom Davies and debutant Ademola Lookman put Pep Guardiola’s side to the sword with a masterclass in clinical finishing.

City dominated possession for much of the match but they failed to breakdown an impressive Toffees rearguard as they were hit on the break time after time.

And Liverpool legend Souness thinks City are lacking a key ingredient in the centre of the pitch.

“City were a tippy tappy outfit from start to finish, they’ve got great forward players but there’s something missing,” Souness said on Sky Sports.

“When you look at the central midfield, Zabaleta is 32, Yaya Toure close to 34 years old, that’s your engine room.

“You have to have piles and piles of enthusiasm and energy in there. They didn’t have it. Yeah they had lots of the ball, tippy tappy, but they didn’t do a lot with it.”]

Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher thinks the defence were to blame against Everton and that the whole back four could be sold.

“It’s the whole back four. And it’s not just today, it’s the whole season at Man City,” added Carragher.

“They haven’t been doing this for years. Every defender at Man City could be sold.”
