Stoke are preparing a bid for West Brom striker Saido Berahino and are confident they will beat Tottenham to his signature, according to reports.

Berahino has been made available by the Baggies this month after falling out of favour with Tony Pulis, who needs to sell players before he can bring in a new winger and midfielder.

And according to The Times,  manager Mark Hughes wants Stoke to firm up their interest in the 22-year-old to beat off competition from Spurs, who remain one of the main contenders to sign Berahino after their proposed deal collapsed in the summer.

West Brom are insisting they will only sell to the north Londoners if Andros Townsend is included in any deal, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is adamant the winger will only leave White Hart Lane for a fee of £14million, which could open the door for Stoke. Townsend is also said to prefer a switch to Newcastle.

When asked about a potential move for Berahino on Monday, Hughes replied: “There was some mention of it, but it would be wrong for me to talk about players from other clubs.

“We are looking in the window and if there’s opportunities we will pursue them.”
