The problem with some of the CIES Football Observatory’s football studies is that they tend to not look over the data and think ‘Well that’s clearly bloody stupid, shall we change it?’.
Their latest release is to list the 110 players in Europe’s top five leagues worth more than £40m. All the usual names are there, but then you see that Nathan Redmond is worth £53m, more than Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil.
Now we quite like Redmond at Football365, but we’re not sodding stupid. Heck, even Redmond’s close family don’t think he’s worth that much.
The list sees Barcelona’s Neymar top the list at €210m , followed by Tottenham pair Dele Alli (€155.1m) and Harry Kane (€153.6m).
It’s all just a nonsense, given that different players are worth different fees to different clubs. Put that in your algorithm and smoke it.
