Graeme Souness believes “it’s a waste of time” for Liverpool to try and rely on injury-prone Daniel Sturridge.
Sturridge is currently sidelined with his third injury of the season, and the England striker appears no closer to making a return.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has asked for fans to be “patient” amid calls for the club to cash in on the player they signed for around £10million from Chelsea in January 2013, but former player and manager Souness believes that Sturridge could be a lost cause at Anfield.
“Sturridge is a top class player, but if you can’t rely on him fitness wise then it’s a waste of time,” he told the Daily Mirror. “It’s a terrible combination in that you can’t keep him fit and you never know when he’ll be fit.
“I can’t remember another player like him. I can’t remember anything from my playing or management days. The medical staff must have looked at every aspect and still not found a solution.
“It’s cruel because Liverpool had a great combination with Sturridge and Luis Suarez. Yet you’ve almost lost them both from that season.”
