Sunderland could lose Mannone to arm injury

Vito Mannone was taken to hospital on Tuesday afternoon amid fears the Sunderland goalkeeper could have fractured his arm.

Manager David Moyes has revealed that the Italian is to undergo checks after being hurt in training.

Mannone would not have played in Wednesday night’s EFL Cup clash with Shrewsbury anyway with England Under-21 international Jordan Pickford’s due to start.

However, Moyes will hope the former Arsenal man has suffered no lasting damage with the Black Cats due at Southampton on Saturday as they chase their first point of the Premier League season.
