Jurgen Klopp gave a tetchy response to a journalist’s take on his side’s performance during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Sunday.
The Reds took the lead after 29 minutes when Philippe Coutinho bent a wonderful shot around Jonjo Shelvey and into the net from 30 yards out.
However, their lead only lasted seven minutes as a huge gap in the Liverpool rearguard was exposed when Shelvey threaded a ball to Joselu through on goal to equalise.
Klopp’s side had 17 shots in a match where Mohamed Salah, Georginio Wijnaldum and Daniel Sturridge all wasted good opportunities to score.
In response to a journalist claiming a draw was a fair result, Klopp said: “Was this your first football game?!”
The German has come under a bit of pressure recently with his side’s failure to convert chances but Klopp reckons they are “not far away” from being Premier League challengers.
“I can talk about our football and the points we get for it, and then we talk about the gap between us and other teams,” Klopp said. “We have, obviously, our hard moments; other teams will have hard moments.
“We have had hard moments and we have to work on our thing. I really think that it looks like we are not far away from a real challenger, so if we do what we are good at and we can score more goals, then we will win games and we don’t have to think about other teams.
“We will close the gap, however big it is, and we will see where we end. But it’s all about our own situation, not thinking about where the others are.”
