Jose Mourinho claims Newcastle United “fought like animals” in their 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Matt Ritchie tucked Dwight Gayle’s lay-off into the bottom corner in the 65th minute of play on Tyneside to give the Magpies the win.

A first Premier League win in five outings lifts Newcastle out of the relegation zone while leaving United 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

When asked about Newcastle’s performance, United boss Mourinho told Sky Sports: “They fought like animals – I hope they take that as a compliment. The gods of football were on their side.

“It wasn’t going to happen for us today. Newcastle gave what they have and what they don’t have, that’s a beautiful thing in football.

“They fought for their point, a point is what they had in mind. We made a defensive mistake and when they are in front they had only one thing in mind and gave their lives to keep a clean sheet.”
