The Shortened Gossip

UNITED REJECT CARRICK BIDS
Well well, this has come out of nowhere. With Manchester United suddenly swamped by central midfielders, the Sunday People claims that both Inter Milan and Newcastle have enquired about the services of Michael Carrick.

Carrick is surely still first choice when fit, but with Ander Herrera, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Marouane Fellaini and Daley Blind all offering support/competition in that area of the pitch, Carrick may have to make do with a bit-part role.

The People report that both clubs have made recent attempts to sign the 33-year-old, but were told to do one in no uncertain terms. They also say that the news will come as a big blow to Steve McClaren, who was hoping to build his midfield around Carrick.

That’s laying it on a bit thick, surely? Carrick’s unavailability can’t have come as that much of a surprise.

SPURS TO SIGN BERAHINO

Having started the clearance of White Hart Lane deadwood, a project that is still ongoing, Tottenham are now in a position where they will look to bring players in. Until now, only defenders have been recruited.

That could change in the next 48 hours, according to the Sunday Express. They go big on claims that a deal for Saido Berahino will be wrapped up soon. Spurs will pay £15m for the West Bromwich Albion striker. Would that move leave West Brom in a little bit of relegation trouble?

The Express claim that Berahino will double his £15,000 wages at Spurs. It says a lot about modern football that my immediate thought was ‘Only getting paid £30,000 per week – weird’.

WELBECK TO BESIKTAS

Sometimes you read a transfer rumour that appears to have been decided by using one random player name generator and another random club generator. This is truly one of those.

The Daily Star report that Turkish side Besiktas will make an audacious bid to sign Danny Welbeck from Arsenal. Welbeck has struggled with injuries and form since arriving at the Emirates from Manchester United, but it would still be a surprise if Arsene Wenger agreed to let him go.

The Star claim that Besiktas president Fikret Orman wants Welbeck to replace Demba Ba, who has left the club to earn all the money in China.
