Tottenham to rival Arsenal for Smalling? Ha ha
Tottenham have emerged as contenders to sign apparent Arsenal, Everton, Leicester, West Brom and West Ham target Chris Smalling, according to reports.
Smalling was pushed out of the regular starting line-up at Manchester United this past season, and his opportunities are likely to be further limited after the arrival of Victor Lindelof at Old Trafford.
Reports claimed earlier this week that Arsenal had joined a veritable queue of mid-table Premier League clubs targeting the 27-year-old.
It was claimed that Arsenal, Everton, West Brom and West Ham were monitoring Smalling’s situation at United.
Leicester are also thought to be interested in the England international, but their £17million purchase of Harry Maguire means they are less likely to press ahead with a deal.
Both the Daily Mail and The Sun report that missing out on signing Maguire from Hull could spur Tottenham into action with regards to Smalling.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino is aware of the need to strengthen his defensive options ahead of an assault on the Premier League and Champions League, and Smalling has been identified as a potential target.
