Manchester United have been dealt a potential injury blow after Anthony Martial left Wembley on crutches with an apparent foot injury.
Martial featured for France in their friendly defeat to England on Tuesday, but the striker was substituted in the 67th minute and was then pictured leaving the stadium on crutches.
The 19-year-old’s participation in Saturday’s trip to Watford is now in doubt, with every media outlet sweating over the fact that United are sweating over the striker’s fitness.
France head coach Didier Deschamps offered a simple diagnosis on Martial after the match, saying: “He is in a lot of pain but it is just a knock on the top of his foot. He got a kick in the penalty area.”
Martial adds to a growing injury list at Old Trafford which now comprises of eight players, with Luke Shaw, Paddy McNair, Antonio Valencia, James Wilson, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick all sidelined, while Chris Smalling picked up a knock for England at the weekend but should be fit to face the Hornets.
Martial’s fitness may be cause for concern for Louis van Gaal, but Wayne Rooney’s much improved performance will provide positives.
