Van Gaal discusses title, the Europa and Giggs

Louis van Gaal has reiterated that Manchester United are in a “process” of winning the title, while they will take the Europa League seriously.

United suffered an exit from the Champions League at the hands of Wolfsburg in midweek, finishing third in their group as they dropped into Europe’s second tier competition, the Europa League.

Van Gaal has been criticised for the style of play he has implemented at United, but he has once more reiterated the “process” he has undertaken as part of his three-year deal.

“You have to analyse the club now,” said Van Gaal. “You cannot compare it with 10 years ago, because there is an evolution in football and in European football.

“I have a task. I came to improve and win the title, when it is possible. We are in that process, but when I say that, I shall have the criticism that football is not a process and things like that.”

Asked on his thoughts about fans voicing their disapproval during games, Van Gaal replied: “I don’t have any doubts.

“You can lose and you can win in sport – you have to accept that. As a manager you have to work very hard and I am working very hard.

“My players are also working hard and we do everything that we can do, so the problem is that we have to meet with the expectations and the expectations at a club like Manchester United are very high.”

Van Gaal played down worries over United’s style, insisting there were positives to glean from Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat in Germany.

“I think the way you have to analyse is always the way, then I think you can also see there were a lot of positive things,” said Van Gaal.

“But when you don’t want to see that, then that’s not my problem. Everybody knows what is happening at this moment with Manchester United and what happened in the group.

“I can say all the things, but I don’t want to defend myself. I work hard, my players work hard, now we are in the Europa League and we have to work hard to win that.”

Van Gaal added, on the Europa League: “For me, it is a big competition.

“You say it is ‘just’ the Europa League. I have already won it once with Ajax in my first season and I was so proud.”

Van Gaal finished by discussing reports that Swansea could lure his assistant manager, Ryan Giggs, to take their vacant managerial role.

“First I have to speak to Ryan Giggs by himself if it’s true,” Van Gaal said. “And [in that case], he’s coming to me. I never read papers and think that it’s the truth. I’m sorry.”
