Van Gaal hopes Depay performance is ‘turning point’

Louis van Gaal hopes that Memphis Depay’s starring role in the 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland can be a “turning point”.

Depay has struggled at Old Trafford since joining from Dutch side PSV for around £25million last summer, scoring just two goals in 20 Premier League appearances.

But the winger put in a man-of-the-match performance to inspire United to a comeback victory against Danish side Midtjylland in their Europa League last-32 second leg, capping off a successful evening with a fine goal.

The 22-year-old was named in a worst Premier League XI of the season so far on Thursday, but his performance at Old Trafford proved that you shouldn’t walk on Memphis before he can run.

Louis van Gaal was delighted with his compatriot after the game.

“I am very happy for him,” the manager said. “He needs that kind of match for his confidence. He can be fantastic, as we all know, and maybe this can be a turning point for him.”
