Van Gaal pleased with Depay despite mistake
Louis van Gaal is pleased with Memphis Depay despite the winger’s costly mistake against Chelsea last weekend.
Brought on as an 87th-minute substitute against Chelsea with United leading 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, Depay led a quick breakaway for the visitors heading into stoppage time.
However, the Dutchman lost the ball when attempting to make a pass to Morgan Schneiderlin, and Chelsea capitalised to the fullest effect, with Diego Costa equalising in the 90th minute.
Depay was then selected for United under-21s for a game against Norwich, with the 21-year-old impressing in a 7-0 victory.
“I think for him it was a very good match as it could raise his confidence and I have seen the reaction of the fans,” Van Gaal said. “These fans are the real fans, those who look to the second team, and they were very enthusiastic
“He had three assists, but all his actions was very enthusiastic and it is also good for him.
“That is why I let him play, because I can’t play too many first-team players in the second team.”
