Vertonghen: We won’t give up on Premier League title

Jan Vertonghen says Tottenham are refusing to give up in the race for the Premier League title until Chelsea have the trophy in their hands.

Spurs beat Southampton 2-1 on Sunday thanks to goals from Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli and the win helped improve their grip on second position.

“We had to work very hard,” Vertonghen told Sky Sports. “Southampton are a great team with great players. We were lucky to be 2-0 up at half time and then had to get the third one but didn’t.

“Chelsea are favourites for the title but we won’t give up until they lift the trophy. We are doing well and have to aim for the highest place possible and keep winning our games.”

Eriksen, meanwhile, was glad to get on the scoresheet with Spurs missing top scorer Harry Kane through injury.

“Everyone felt responsibility without Harry [Kane],” said Eriksen. “We had 11 players and we were good enough to substitute.

“It was important someone else scored and we did. We had exactly the same system but with Son up front instead of Harry. He is a different player but I think we did really well in the first half.”
