Arsenal have confirmed that striker Danny Welbeck will be sidelined for “a period of months” after undergoing surgery on his injured knee.
Welbeck sustained the injury at the end of April, missing the conclusion of Arsenal’s FA Cup winning season.
The England forward has been struggling in his rehabilitation however, and has now undergone surgery to correct the issue.
A statement on Arsenal’s official website read: “It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field.
“Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well.”
Welbeck’s injury leaves Arsenal with just Olivier Giroud as their only recognised striker, although the likes of Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez can be utilised in a more advanced position.
