Arsene Wenger says Arsenal were interested in Romelu Lukaku before the Belgium striker joined Chelsea.
The Gunners will come up against Lukaku on Saturday lunchtime when Wenger takes his side to Goodison Park to face Everton.
The Toffees forward has scored 18 goals this season, one behind Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot. Despite Everton’s insistence that the striker is not for sale, the 22-year-old has been linked with a host of top clubs in the summer, including former team Chelsea.
The Blues brought Lukaku to England from Anderlecht in 2011 and Wenger insists Arsenal were also in the hunt but the player had his heart set on a move to Stamford Bridge.
“Yes, we knew him in Belgium but at the time he opted to go to Chelsea,” said Wenger on Friday.
“He is developing every year.
“His finishing is better, his technical is better. He has better numbers.”
