Thomas Lemar decided to “stay in Monaco” instead of joining Arsenal, according to Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners launched a late £92million bid for Lemar as the deadline closed in, as they sought a replacement for the outgoing Alexis Sanchez.
Sanchez was on the verge of joining Manchester City, but Arsenal pulled the plug on both his and Lemar’s moves after reportedly deciding it was too late to conclude a deal for the latter.
Other claims suggest Lemar rejected a move to Arsenal however, and Wenger appeared to confirm as such when he stated that the Gunners could not source an adequate replacement for Sanchez in time.
In a further interview with beIN SPORT, Wenger touched only briefly on the situation with Lemar.
“The player has chosen to stay in Monaco,” he said.
“You do not want to talk too much. You have to respect what happens on the negotiation side. I know we live in the era of transparency, but at some stage, to respect everybody, you have to not talk too much about that.”
