Arsene Wenger described Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Olympiakos as “the complete performance”, as his side made the last 16 of the Champions League.
Olivier Giroud scored a hat-trick to take Arsenal into the knockout stage, with Arsenal’s defence not severely tested following the opening exchanges.
Wenger made a point of praising the performance of his side given the club’s current injury crisis.
“We had a perfect performance on the mental side and tactical side too,” Wenger said. “It was a complete team performance.
“We needed great character tonight and these kinds of performances will only make the team stronger.
“It’s a fantastic achievement for us because we have lost players. Not many people gave us a chance but we are a real team.
“It is certainly one of my best European results. We had to produce a perfect performance to win and we did just that.
“This will certainly strengthen the belief of the squad. It’s a special night for us and will create a positive memory.”
Wenger wasn’t finished using the word “perfect” either, complimenting Giroud for his display.
“It was a perfect performance. I’ve always defended his character and he has shown it again today.”
Joel Campbell also merited mention:
“He’s a very good player who fights for the team. The loans made him tough and he’s only getting better.”
