Arsene Wenger has the full backing of Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke, but is considering resigning as manager, according to reports.

Both the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph report that Kroenke has offered Wenger his ‘unequivocal backing’ amid a poor run of form for Arsenal, which has seen them fall 11 points behind in the Premier League title race, suffer an FA Cup knockout at the hands of Watford, and a seemingly imminent exit against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Sami Mokbel writes that Wenger ‘will be allowed to mastermind his own exit strategy,’ and that the Frenchman ‘is as determined as ever to continue’.

Jeremy Wilson of the Telegraph adds that Wenger ‘wants to be judged at the end of the season,’ but the manager is wary of growing discontent among the Gunners support. He adds that ‘the players’ confidence is being affected’ by the discontent at the club.

While Wenger is adamant that he wishes to remain at the Emirates Stadium at least until the expiration of his current contract in 2017, Mokbel writes that ‘increasing bitterness’ from the fans could force him to leave the club of his own accord before that time.

Mokbel adds that the club are ‘considering potential replacements’ for when Wenger does leave. Pep Guardiola was top of their shortlist, but the Spaniard will take over Manchester City in the summer after leaving Bayern Munich.
