Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal are in negotiations to sign Shkodran Mustafi and hopes a deal for the Valencia defender “will be done” before the end of the transfer window.

Laurent Koscielny returned for the Gunners’ 0-0 draw with Leicester on Saturday but remains the club’s only fit senior centre-back.

Youngster Rob Holding earned praise in our 16 conclusions from Saturday’s match, however Wenger is keen to add a more experienced head to his defensive options.

“Mustafi? We hope it will be done. He is one of a number of players we are looking at,” the Arsenal manager told French TV station SFR Sport.

“We are struggling to find the players we need, but we must be responsible.

“Mustafi is one of a number of players we are looking at, but, yes, negotiations are ongoing.”

Last week Arsenal were given a boost in their pursuit of the Germany international, with Valencia director of football Garcia Pitarch revealing the club are currently failing to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.
