Wenger: ‘It would be a lie’ to say we didn’t want Mbappe
Arsene Wenger says that Arsenal are interested in signing Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe, but that finances could scupper any potential deal.
Mbappe has emerged as one of the most coveted talents in world football after a remarkable campaign with Monaco.
The 18-year-old has scored 23 goals in 37 games in his first full season with the club, including five goals in seven Champions League games.
A number of Europe’s elite are monitoring the striker’s progress, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all having been linked.
Wenger added Arsenal’s name to that long list on Wednesday, but suggested that the Gunners do not have the sort of money to fund a potential £100m deal.
“Obviously it would be hypocritical and a lie to say that we are not looking at him,” Wenger told French broadcaster SFR Sport.
“But he’s already in the bracket of clubs who are, perhaps, much better financed than us.”
