Wenger on Gerrard: I thought he would play until 40

Arsene Wenger admits he was a “bit surprised” to see Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard retire from football so early.

The former England international announced his retirement on Thursday following a distinguished career in which he won a Champions League, a UEFA Cup, three League Cups and two FA Cups.

Wenger believes Gerrard had the ability to play on until he was 40 and couldn’t hide his admiration of the ex-midfielder following his latest announcement.

“For me, he was a huge player,” Wenger said ahead of Arsenal’s Premier league match against Bournemouth over the weekend.

“It was a bit surprising because I thought he had 2-3 more years. I thought he would play until 40.

“He was a fantastic player who had the qualities that every midfielder dreams of.

“On top of that, he was loyal to Liverpool. It’s a quality that you don’t find a lot these days.”
