Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is only looking at improving his defence before the end of the transfer window – although he could sign other players if the “quality” is right.
The news is likely to come as a shock to Gunners fans, who have been hoping the club would sign a top quality striker this summer after Jamie Vardy turned them down to remain at Premier League champions Leicester City.
Wenger has made centre-back his only priority with Gabriel and Per Mertesacker out for a considerable length of time and Laurent Koscielny allowed extra leave after his exploits at Euro 2016.
When asked about how many players he thought he needed to sign, Wenger replied: “I don’t count in numbers because numbers wise we have too big a squad.
“If we find the top quality we will still strengthen the squad.”

And asked which areas he was targeting, he added: “No other specific areas [apart from centre back]. It really depends on the quality we find. If someone can strengthen our team in any position and gives us superior quality then we will do it.”
With the Liverpool game just around the corner, Wenger admits finding new recruits is on the back burner while he prepares his squad for their Premier League opener.
“Today my focus is not too much on transfers because we have an important game in 48 hours and to win this game, transfers won’t help us because we have a strong squad and have to deal with the game.
“We have lost three centre backs because Laurent Koscielny is also not ready and out of the game but I believe we are equipped to do well.
“Transfer wise, as soon as we do something we will inform you.”
