Gordon Strachan's men are currently bottom of Group A after losing 2-0 at home to Belgium on Friday, but they have a chance to climb above Macedonia with victory in Skopje on Tuesday.

Norwich City defender Whittaker believes there have been signs of progress in the past few matches and he is hoping to finish the campaign with a flourish against Macedonia and then Croatia next month.

"Macedonia is going to be tough but we believe we can go there and get a result to get momentum going into the Croatia game," Whittaker said in the Daily Star.

"We have played some good stuff the last few games because we are getting more positive Hopefully we can start creating chances and getting goals and results.

"We do that by working hard, listening to the manager and putting it out there on the pitch.

"We believe we have the players in the changing room to get the results. The performances have been there the last few games but we want the results to match that."

Whittaker says manager Strachan has been keeping the spirits of the Scotland players high following the defeat by Belgium.

He said: "The manager is stressing that we need to take the positives from the match.

"There was plenty to be happy about in that performance and hopefully we can take the positives into the game on Tuesday.

"As I said, the performances have been there the last few games and we want to continue down that route but as a changing room, we want the results to be there as well."
