Lichaj, who has made 26 appearances for the Reds since moving to the City Ground from Aston Villa on a free transfer in the summer, limped off in the recent 4-1 home defeat to Wigan.

The 25-year-old American becomes the latest name on a lengthy list of absentees for Forest, joining fellow defenders Kelvin Wilson and Jack Hobbs, midfielders Henri Lansbury and David Vaughan, striker Dexter Blackstock and the versatile Chris Cohen on the sidelines.

A statement on Forest's official website said: "The club cannot set an expected date for Eric's return but will give supporters an update on his progress in due course."
