Lambert: We were beaten up

Paul Lambert offered no excuses after his young Aston Villa side were humbled in an 8-0 thrashing at Chelsea.

Lambert selected the same side which stunned Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield, but once Fernando Torres scored inside three minutes it was clear there would be no repeat of that result.

In the end Villa were slightly fortunate to escape without shipping double figures as Brad Guzan made several fine saves - including one to keep out Lucas Piazon's penalty.

Lambert told the club website: "Everything that could go wrong went wrong. We have been on a really good run but we got beaten up today by a really good side. We were second best.

"We never turned up. We have been beaten pretty heavily. But we were second best all over In the second half it could have been more to be perfectly honest. All credit to Chelsea, they beat us up."

Tottenham visit Villa Park on boxing Day, and Lambert expects an immediate response.

He said: "You always learn when you win, lose or draw. That will be a wake-up call for us, that. Things have been going really fine for us. It was only Manchester United, Man City and Chelsea now who have turned us over. We will bounce back!

"We only have two days to mull over it but we have to go again against Tottenham on Wednesday. I am sure whoever plays on Wednesday will atone for that."

m absolutely disgusted that I've been misquoted in saying that if a chance came up to join Arsenal I would be interested. What I meant to say is if Man United or Chelsea were interested......
