Chris Hughton: Looking for cheap signings

Chris Hughton: Looking for cheap signings

The Canaries have lodged bids for Swansea forward Danny Graham and Celtic striker Gary Hooper, with a second improved offer on what is understood to have been a £5million deal knocked back by the Scottish club.

Norwich have not won in the Barclays Premier League since beating Wigan on December 15 and following the 5-0 mauling at Liverpool have now lost five of the last six as they start to look anxiously over their shoulders on the battle at the wrong end of the table.

Bottom club QPR shelled out some £8million to bring in French striker Loic Remy to bolster their survival bid, while struggling Newcastle have also brought in a couple of reinforcements.

Hughton, though, accepts the Norfolk club will have to look for value for money in any transfers they are able to complete over the next eight days.

"That is where they are and what they are able to do and a group of clubs can do that. We have to do things our way. It is never that easy, but we will keep going right the way through," Hughton said, quoted in the Eastern Daily Press.

"It is something that we want to do, but perhaps people don't understand how difficult it is."

"You look at QPR spending big money bringing in Loic Remy, who scores on his debut, and that is another example of what these clubs are capable of doing."

It had been reported Norwich captain Grant Holt could be offered to Celtic as a makeweight to help push through a deal for Hooper, who scored a double in Celtic's 4-0 Clydesdale Bank Premier League win over Dundee United at Parkhead last night to take his tally for the season to 22.

However, Norwich chief executive David McNally ruled out any talk of such a compromise.

He wrote on Twitter: "In response to (lots) of earlier messages, none of our senior players are for sale and won't be included in any player swaps."

Norwich host Blue Square Premier side Luton in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday, before aiming to kickstart their faltering Premier League campaign against Hughton's former club Tottenham next Wednesday night.

Hughton said: "What is important now is that we get the Liverpool defeat well behind us."

"Sometimes what can happen is a defeat like that and a type of performance like that gets a reaction from the players - and we will certainly need it."
