The hosts largely bossed the match, and Adel Taraabt missed a penalty, Mark Bunn making a fine save to maintain the deadlock.

And Hughton felt that an away point against a Rangers side boasting new signings Chris Samba, Andros Townsend and Jermain Jenas was 'well earned'.

"From our point of view it was a point well earned," he said.

"I know we've had to save a penalty but I think on the balance of play, and being away from home, then most definitely it was well deserved.

"Any point away from home in the Premier League is a big point, and these are a team that are striving to get away from that bottom three and they've bought very, very well.

"We are a hard-working team who were always going to have a tough season, so it is all about assessing the games and coming good again.

"At the moment, although we are not picking up three points, we have played out two good draws and the gap between us and the bottom three is very important."

Hughton confirmed that Anthony Pilkington will be withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland's friendly with Poland in Dublin on Wednesday due to a hamstring injury.
