Fergie: Squad better than '99

Sir Alex Ferguson has said that his current Manchester United squad is stronger than the one that claimed the treble in 1999.

The Squad IS better than the one in '99. It isn't just as extreme in qualities as the one in '99. The high quality of the first team in '99 carried us through a few crucial matches. This squad is much more balanced, especially the midfield and defense. Nothing a few tactical decisions can't handle though. I really believe our strike force is better than the one in '99. It is much more diverse and adaptable than the one in '99, without disrespecting that marvelous bunch.

Whilst the 99 team was the better first 11, it was somewhat crippled in the final. Despite the fact that the current first 11 isn't as good as 99, the advantage of having squad players such as Jones, Cleverly, Evans, Kagawa and Valencia is that we have a range of options. These players for the most part down look out of place in the first team and don't give the appearance of makeweights. Contrast Berg and May. Not in Evans' league. The midfield in the 99 final was ridiculously compromised. Had the current squad players been available to Ferguson in 99 we would not have been under the cosh as much as we were.

If you had to pick a starting 11 from both squads you would only have a centre back and perhaps Rooney from the modern squad.

He has a point. I think our first choice front 2 are better than our 99 front 2. The subs Sheringham is better than Welbeck but he's only young, Hernandez & Ole are quite similar in sense that they are both great at coming off the bench to score, Hernandez is quicker though. The midfield no question Scholes 99 & Keane are better than Carrick & Cleverly & Becks & Giggs 99 are better than Valencia & Nani but we have Young that can come in & we still have Giggs as well slighty older though still a good option to bring on, Kagawa can play there too. Back then 99 we had to play Blomquist & Becks & Butt in midfield because Scholes & Keane were suspended we have better options now to bring in Cleverly & Carrick are injured there's Kagawa, Ando Scholes & Jones. At the back Stam & Johnsen where a good partnership but Berg & May aren't better than Smalling or Evans or Rio & Vidic much better CB choices. RB & LB we had good in 99 but we have good options now as well. DeGea only young but could be a great keeper, Schmeichel was obviously better but he was much more experienced we had decent back up keeper then & now. In fairness though I don;t think you can compare the sides because they have completely different styles but now we have got a bigger & stronger squad,

The current squad is stronger in terms of sheer numbers, but not in terms of ability.....The current first 11(no matter who you choose to pick!) is NOWHERE NEAR as good as the 1999 first 11!

I agree with Fergie. Our team is what making us successful this season (punctuated by some individual class). We have so much cover in most/all positions. The team is working well together and if Fergie rotates a different player comes in and fits perfectly into the team. dozzey.. why are arsenal so cr*p this season? If your key men fall injured (most are very prone I know)/play rubbish, absolute dog doo needs to come in and usually play like what they are (sh*te). Your squad still has Arshavin in it. Also look at Chelsea or City- they spent big on players meant to be rotation players but who don't fit (oscar, hazzard, mata vying for one position) or are rubbish (Maicon) or injury prone (Rodwell). United have an excellent SQUAD, we can compete on several fronts without fielding tired players.

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
