I don't get what people fail to understand about this situation. In roughly 2005 the board will have told Wenger; "You know that huge stadium we're building on expensive North London land?" "Yes." "Well, it's VERY expensive. To pay for it we cannot invest as much money in the team as we have been, for about 8 years." "Oh dear, you cannot expect me to challenge for the title under those conditions." "We don't expect that, it would just be very good if you could maintain a Champions League place every year, we'd be more than happy with that." "The fans won't like it." "No, but if you can pick up the League Cup or FA Cup once or twice in this period we might be able to smooth things over." "What if that doesn't happen?" "We'll still back you for as long as we finish top 4 because that would be a great achievement in this situation. Once the stadium is paid for we'll give you loads of money to get the team back to the top again."

@gab1965 i said it more that he could be a hated man. My comment also stated what Wenger has acheived and that shouldnt be forgotten i certainly havent forgotten it and who would we get in at this moment of time that will improve us? Im not sure there is anyone! Dont think the board will like Mourinhos ways. But like my comment also states he needs to change his ways and realise that its currently not working!!!!

OK - My argument is be keep Wenger only if we can lose Hill-Wood - the man is a patronizing dinosaur. Everything he says is sanctimonious, insulting tripe and the sooner he goes the better. God almighty, how did we ever manage to lose David Dein yet keep this fool.

knuckzz - Didn't you celebrate when you reached the Champions League Final? Really? Most supporters in Europe would consider winning a semi final to be an 'up'.

You'd think Arsenal were always this good!! They weren't! Wenger created the best teams and the most success that Arsenal have ever had, and now the supporters have turned it against him. He, more than anyone bar, ahem, Ferguson has done enough to leave on his own terms. But, despite providing knock out Champions League football, year after year, and a final, supporters are going to 'hate' him if this continues? Says more about them than it does about him. The 'loyal' football supporters shows his true colours again. No wonder their players run to Barcelona or City at the drop of a hat.

I think we may finish 5th this year and that the fact we've avoided that for the last few years with our constant squad changes is a minor miracle. I am upset that a top 4 finish is the best we can hope for year in year out but I'm also confident our current predicament won't last forever. We can't compete, financially, with 3 or 4 teams in our division whilst also paying for our stadium and trying to ensure the club remains financially stable, as well as competitive. We can however, achieve 2 or 3 of these goals and look to the long term when we will have the perfect foundation to rise again. We haven't fallen like Liverpool or Newcastle, with nothing to show for it and no increased revenues on the horizon that will help them get back to the top table. The club has spent most of this season tying down the best of our young players to long term contracts that will see them either sticking with our fight back to the top or forcing other clubs to pay far more for their services. I still think the future is bright for AFC, even if the present looks a little dim

@sanity1892 maybe check what he did before commenting! And yeah he is annoying most Gooners now and i am feeling it is time for him to go but no one can say he wasnt successful for us 2 doubles a season unbeaten etc its just been the last 7 years but in that time we have reached numerous Finals just flopped in them barring the CL final which we were unlucky and down to 10 men. Maybe he should go in the summer and we will still remember him for the good times but 2 - 3 more years of whats happening now well i feel he will be a hated man. I worry though who would we get to replace him? He just needs to bite the bullet and accept he needs to change his way as his plan is not working!

If I were an Arsenal fan I would be pretty p***ed off at being the best in England so recently, then being in a position now where top four seems to be the only goal. On the other hand, now top four IS the aim of the club (not the fans, obviously) the manager and chairman are right to say 'nothing to see here', because this season is much like the last and the one before that. The press seem to be reacting to a slow news week by trying to get a story out of Arsenal where there isn't one. If the title race was a bit hotter, or Dalglish was still busy making a fool of himself, Arsenal would have barely made the news this week.
