m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.

That's one opinion, but others give their thanks to the man. We also have ideas for a relegation playoff, happy memories of the season and a defence of Liverpool's campaign...

Amazed by some the comments on here saying there was no intent. Why were his studs up for a start?

This is why I have defended players like Shelvey, Kompany and Nani for the reds cards they've received this season. What you see here is a truly reckless, out of control and dangerous tackle. I do think Martinez is probably right about there being no intent to cause injury, but intent really isn't the issue. Surely McManaman will learn his lesson though and I hope for Haidara's (and McManaman's) sake the damage turns out to be less serious than suspected.

@bigal147 - couldn't agree more. Even accepting that he quite possibly didn't intend to hurt Haidara, he surely must've known what he'd done after the event. Pretty appalling reaction.

I agree with ray_bandana and gremlin666. I don't think he was out to hurt Haidara, but the replay being shown hundreds of times certainly does not help his case. If you just watch the replay, it is a sickening collision and I hope Haidara makes a full recovery. Halsey was clearly impaired in his sighting of the incident, unlucky or perhaps should he have been in a better position.Give the kid the benefit of the doubt, he is young, it is his first game, and it was an unfortunate accident where someone has been seriously hurt. No knee-jerks please (pardon the pun). What was more hurrendous was the attack on McManaman at half-time. Out of order and there was no need for it!

MotD2 seemed to show that the referee had a player blocking his view for the challenge, so I don't think you can blame him. I do wonder why the linesman, who was fairly close by, didn't flag. As for Martinez invoking the old 'not that sort of player' defense, that was pretty disappointing to hear. It's not a question of malice. No-one's saying he's an evil player. But he made a shocking challenge, and therefore by definition he is the kind of player who is capable of making shocking challenges. I hope that privately they make sure he knows that he can't go around doing that, even if publicly they defend him.

I am really surprised at the general reaction here. I see this challenge as the same type as Nanis sending off in the CL. Both players are only looking at the ball and take their foot up high to get the ball and in both cases they are "surprised" by their opponent. Only difference is that Nani was more lucky and didn“t hurt his opponent seriously but had he hit the head it would have probably been worse than McManamans tackle. Yet Nani everybody was surprised he got red and now everybody is demanding red....

All this nonsense about what the player was intending to do. You go in at that height and that hard, why should the other player have to worry whether you can time it correctly or not? It is reckless with no regard for the safety of your opponent. He knows that if he misses that he can injure someone badly. There's no place for this kind of tackle and the FA should throw the book at him.

@ray_bandana - What really stuck me was the lack of emotion on the part of McManaman after he'd made contact with Haidara's knee. Running straight off for the loose ball, then a deliberate handball which he even had the nerve to contest without a flicker of concern for the injury he'd caused. The only time he showed any emotion was when confronted by John Carver when he hid like the coward he undoubtedly is

The thing is it looks like he's about to kick the ball away as it sort of gets away from Haidara but at the last moment turns his foot and goes studs up. Either way its horrific and Martinez did himself no favours with his comments. Bad day all round for the magpies with that shocking handball too.

@ray_bandana - I'm with you. I think he genuinely believed he was going to get the ball and not the man. Course that doesn't excuse him for doing it - it's an horrific challenge that he should never have attempted. I also feel a little bit sorry for Halsey on this one cos his view was impaired and, in real time, I could see why he thought it was just a coming together. That said, as has been suggested elsewhere, why the fourth official (or someone) can't adjudicate after the event, in severe cases such as this, is beyond me.
