The 22-year-old, who has been plagued by injuries over the past few seasons, has only made 16 appearances for City since his £12m arrival from Everton just over a year ago.
Rodwell's only outing this term came against Stoke on 14 September, but the player sustained a hamstring problem and has been on the sidelines since then.
City are unlikely to risk the player when they travel to play West Ham on 19 October or the Champions League visit to CSCK Moscow.
But City boss Manuel Pellegrini may give Rodwell his return in the Capital One Cup fourth round clash with Newcastle at St James' Park on 30 October.
"I'm fit and I am back training," Rodwell said. "Basically I am fit for the next game. I won't be match-fit but I am fit for selection."
