After a terrible start to the season which sees the Black Cats rooted to the foot of the table on one point, Giaccherini revealed that there was a hostile atmosphere in the dressing room after Saturday's 4-0 defeat at Swansea.

However, the Italian is calling for his team-mates to channel their feelings effectively ahead of Sunday's crucial encounter with their bitter local rivals.

"We were angry with ourselves and angry with each other because it was not a good performance - the second half especially," he told the Shields Gazette.

"But I don't think anger is a bad thing, it shows that they care and that they have passion.

"It is important now though that we use that anger the right way, that we control it and take it into our next game and that we use it to drive us on to get the win that we need."

The summer signing is under no illusions as to the importance of the Wear-Tyne derby and has likened it to a full-blooded Italian fixture.

"I know about the derby game - I know it is like Roma v Lazio," he added.

"In Rome, whichever side loses the derby, it is very bad, and I know that that is what it is like here.

"The new players at Sunderland are quickly told how important the derby is.

"I am looking forward to the game and every Sunderland player must do the same because we need to be completely focused on getting a win which will change the mood and get the club going."

Sunderland v Newcastle is on Sky Sports 1 on Sunday from 12.30pm

ll very well selling all midfield and strikers but unless we bring anyone in that is better than what we had then it will be a terrible transfer window in my view. Sorted out the defense but our midfield and striker options look very light.

ove it when Jose accuses others of being defensive, cynical and playing to win. If I was Wenger, I'd get that quote laminated and framed - surely the biggest compliment he's ever received from Mourinho. You've got him riled Arsene - you're relevant again!

t's wrong to be making a joke out of Bender's name at the expense of gay people. It's the kind of childish, uncivilised thing that Football365 would deride and ridicule if it was another media outlet saying. Why is there a need for jokes like this? Does it make your writers feel like men? F365 might suggest that I 'lighten up', but it is genuinely traumatic for people who have been oppressed all their lives to be the butt of jokes, and to be told...
