Dean was in charge of the controversial 2-2 draw between the rivals in 2009 and was hit by a coin thrown from the Cardiff section of the crowd before half-time.

He went on to award Cardiff a controversial stoppage-time penalty from which Ross McCormack scored a dramatic equaliser.

Roberto Martinez, then the Swansea manager, said after that game: "Mike said the penalty was given because Ashley (Williams, Swansea defender) had his arms around the striker (McCormack) but there were nine or 10 instances like that in the game. It was an emotional decision."

Dean has not taken charge of a Cardiff home game since.

Managers are forbidden by the FA from commenting on referee appointments ahead of matches, and Swansea boss Laudrup and Bluebirds counterpart Mackay have risked disciplinary measures by doing so.

Neither manager was critical of Dean, but both chose to speak about his appointment.

When asked if he was surprised to see Dean had been placed in charge of the game Mackay said: "No. He is a top-level referee.

"There have been plenty of occasions where a referee has been involved in something and then a couple of years later has gone back into the same environment. It is probably good that that happens. He is a very good referee."

During his pre-match press conference, Laudrup had added: "I don't know if I am surprised.

"He will be the referee, he will do his best. Firstly, because he is a professional and secondly because he will have a lot of eyes on him at the stadium, on the television, from the FA, the referees' association, everybody will look at him for his performance. I am confident he will deliver his best."

t's a bloody good goal, though. Sh!t, the kid's gonna be the worlds best before we know it, isn't he? He's got the touch of genius in him. Like Neymar, but with muscles and stuff. He's doing a Ronaldo as we watch. He's bulked up to be able to ride the tackles, but he's improved technically as well. His touch is sublime. Bugger.
