Hughton hails 'big point'

Chris Hughton believes everyone connected with Norwich City can be proud of their performance in the 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

The Canaries were given a standing ovation by the Carrow Road faithful on Saturday as they more than held their own against Premier League title hopefuls.

Norwich gave as good as they got throughout a tight contest and collected an impressive clean sheet against a side which has plundered 68 goals in 25 games this season - including seven in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium back in November.

Hughton feels he could have given the locals even more to celebrate at the final whistle, with Norwich creating chances of their own, but is more than happy to collect another useful point in the battle to beat the drop.

He told Sky Sports: "I think we absolutely deserved it.

"You know you have got to defend very well against, offensively, as good a team as there is in the country, and we had to defend very well. But we also had some reasonably clear chances, I thought.

"Nathan Redmond's was as clear as any in the first half period and then the reaction at the end was because our supporters saw how we finished the game.

"When Nathan Redmond has got through on the right-hand side, and then Russell Martin has got through on the right-hand side, they saw a team that was not only fighting to keep a clean sheet but seeing if we could win the game. I thought we were excellent today."

On what a stalemate with high-flying City could do for his squad and their confidence heading forward, Hughton added: "It's a big point. It's a point against Manchester City, with what they are able to do, and it's a performance where our supporters saw us trying to win the game.

"It wasn't one where we sat back and settled for a draw, we had chances of our own. I think that's what they saw today.

"We will certainly need to take that spirit and that quality we showed today in possession at times right the way through to the end of the season."

e was right to leave, but not just because of the money City were coming into. If I remember rightly he had a reasonable amount of chances to shine at City, but he never passed the bloody ball. Loads of aimless dribbles and 40 yard shots and not much else. I would say that if he had learnt to be a bit more of a team player he may have done better at City.
