Blues midfielder Ramires was sent off in injury-time at Villa Park for a two-footed lunge on El Ahmadi which Lambert described as a "leg-breaker" - adding that the midfielder was lucky to escape with just a sore shin.

Lambert told Villa's official website: "If Karim comes in from another angle, he breaks his leg. It was shocking. He has got a sore one but thankfully he's okay.

"He has a sore one on his shin. It certainly could have been worse."

Lambert also hopes that forward Gabby Agbonlahor's calf injury is not too serious.

The Scot added: "Gabby had a little problem with his calf at half-time. We had to watch it. An hour or so was enough because we still have masses of games to play.

"It was just a precaution. I think he will be okay."
