The 27-year-old striker, who has scored 13 goals while on loan from QPR this season, has missed the Magpies last five games - of which they have lost four - including heavy losses to Everton, Southampton and Manchester United.

United boss Alan Pardew had hoped to have had the French international back to spearhead a revival at the Britannia Ground on Saturday, but he admitted this is no longer an option with the player more likely to return a week later in at home to Swansea.

"Remy won't make this game, but we'd like to think he'll make the next one," said Pardew.

In better news for Newcastle, goalkeeper Tim Krul could return against Stoke after missing the last two games with a knee problem.

However, full-back Mathieu Debuchy, who has a groin injury, is not expected to be back on the training pitch until next week and midfielder Moussa Sissoko is still battling a hamstring strain.

Newcastle are currently ninth in the Premier League with 46 points from 33 games.

t's why Mourinho is so successful. He gives players a specific, limited set of functions to perform. They are but a cog in a machine. Do no more, do no less. I assume he learnt it from LvG :)

really hope that someone in the mainstream media spots that the Bayern manager played for and managed Barcelona quite well, and thinks to mention it in the build up. That would be really interesting.
