Pardew was unable to even go into the technical area during the game as he was booed every time he made an appearance.

Newcastle fans chanted 'Pardew out' solidly for much of the game and on 69 minutes a number of supporters - as anticipated - departed the ground as a form of protest again Pardew and club owner Mike Ashley.

Pardew - who before the game insisted he would not resign - was standing firm after the match, but he admitted it was tough.

"It was a strange atmosphere in the stadium, and we had to stand up today," Pardew told Sky Sports.

"Obviously it is difficult. Our fans are frustrated, but I still think they are the best fans in the world.

"They are upset. We will look to recruit in the summer and come back stronger.

"Coming to the sideline I was antagonising them so I took a seat.

"I was just proud of the players."

Pardew also had sympathy for his counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose side were relegated after their loss at St James' Park.

"They've got good players and a good young manager," Pardew added.

"He'll grow. You get stronger when you go through difficult times."

I

t's why Mourinho is so successful. He gives players a specific, limited set of functions to perform. They are but a cog in a machine. Do no more, do no less. I assume he learnt it from LvG :)

really hope that someone in the mainstream media spots that the Bayern manager played for and managed Barcelona quite well, and thinks to mention it in the build up. That would be really interesting.
