Redknapp's squad return to training on Monday and they have an exacting set of fixtures before the Championship season begins on August 3 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

He will be taking his side on two trips, firstly to Devon where they take on Exeter City during a training camp, and then to Austria where games against Besiktas and Udinese are on their schedule.

"The lads are back on Monday and it's all systems go," Redknapp said.

"We've got a couple of good pre-season trips - one down to Devon, and one to Austria - with some decent fixtures as well, so we're looking forward to it.

"Pre-season is a vitally important period. We'll need fit players to get out of this league, players that can play week in, week out.

"There's some players we know we can get fitter than they were last year - there'll be no excuses. Some of the lads looked overweight and not as fit as they should be last season. Their weights have got to be right and their fitness levels have got to be high.

"We're looking to get ourselves promoted this year and we'll need everyone at their peak."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
