Cesar was widely expected to leave QPR over the summer following their relegation from the Premier League and he was repeatedly linked with a move to Fiorentina.

Reports had suggested the Brazil international turned down a switch to the Serie A club, but Fiorentina's sporting director Daniele Prade denied making an approach for the keeper.

"We were never rejected by Julio Cesar because we never contacted Julio Cesar," Prade told La Nazione.

"For two reasons - Julio Cesar has not played a real match since last April and then he has a very high salary, too high for us."

Technical director Eduardo Macia also confirmed that Fiorentina had shown an interest in bringing Marco Verratti back to Italy from Paris St Germain.

Macia claims Verratti was interested in joining the Viola, but the midfielder eventually signed a new contract at PSG.

"Fiorentina was, above all, a player's desire," Macia told Corriere Fiorentino. "He liked Fiorentina's identity so much and our style of play. So, we tried to realise this dream."

he 'where does it end' argument is an absurd one and completely misses the point of the Rooney Rule, which applies to all minorities. It doesn't force any team to appoint anyone, it merely requires them to interview at least one minority candidate.

ou make a lot of good points, but I still find myself instinctively against anything that makes it easier for Paul Ince to get managerial roles
