The 24-year-old playmaker linked up with the Cottagers last summer on a season-long loan agreement from Queens Park Rangers - following their relegation out of the Premier League.

He was, however, restricted to just 16 appearances in all competitions as Fulham struggled for form and boss Martin Jol paid the price with his job.

It became clear in January that Taarabt was no longer part of the plans at Craven Cottage, and the way was paved for him to make another switch.

Serie A giants AC Milan came calling and the Morocco international is determined to make the most of an unexpected opportunity.

Taarabt, who netted a spectacular solo goal against Napoli on Saturday, told Milan Channel: "It's a dream to be at AC Milan and it was fantastic to score on my debut. I hope it's the beginning of a great adventure.

"I don't know why I wasn't playing at Fulham. I'm now at Milan where there are so many important players and I'm happy to be here.

"I still have four months to prove that I can play in this team because I want to stay at AC Milan."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.
