The on-loan Frenchman has fired in 14 goals for the Magpies, meaning the QPR striker has scored over 30% of Newcastle's goals this season.

An impressive campaign for the forward has seen him linked with Arsenal, Sunday's opponents Liverpool and several top European sides.

Despite the interest in Remy, the Newcastle boss believes they still have a chance of securing a deal for him - admitting it's crucial that they are active in the upcoming transfer window.

Alan Pardew told Sky Sports: "I think we've got to give the fans and club a lift in the summer by recruiting well, and hopefully we can do that.

"It's obvious that we need to recruit offensive players that are good enough for Newcastle and that's what we're going to focus on.

"We're not completely resigned (on Remy), we're working hard to keep him.

"He has been an important part of our season - if you take him away, we'll need to replace him for sure. We lost (Yohan) Cabaye in the Christmas period and that has been difficult for us."

Large numbers of Newcastle fans have called for owner Mike Ashley to sack Pardew in the wake of a disappointing end to the season.

Following a strong start to the campaign, the Magpies finished in 10th place in the league, and the former West Ham boss believes the fans have every right to be disillusioned with the club.

"Our fans are brilliant fans - they are just frustrated and I understand that.

"Hopefully they understand that if we can put things right in the summer, we can come back stronger next year."

We have more chance of signing Messi! Every player at Newcastle knows we are just a shop window and with our current system we will never compete for anything. Look at us before and after the January window. The team know as soon as any half-decent player can be sold for a profit they will be gone and we are right back where we started. Professionals or not it must be soul destroying for them and for the manager too.
