Reading led 1-0 at half time at the Madejski Stadium, but after a second half comeback from Fulham, it took a late equaliser from Hal Robson-Kanu to rescue a point.
It was the fourth time this season in the Premier League that Reading had thrown away a lead, and the Royals have now lost nine points from winning positions.
"It was strange first half, we came out and played some good stuff," McDermott said after the game.
"We are taking leads in this league, that's four times now and that's a real positive. We are playing on the front foot, we just have to finish the job off.
"Having said that, we were 3-2 down with two minutes to go so we have to say a point gained.
"We had an opportunity after half-time to go 2-0 up. And if we take that we probably go on to win the game."
He added: "We have given everything today and our crowd nearly brought us over the line. We will move on from this to the next game."
McDermott did express his frustration that his side seemed unable to hold on to leads.
"When we get to 1-0 we need to keep playing our game," McDermott said.
"I have been the manager for three years and that's what we have done. We need to keep doing that."
